Your identity is not your illness…

Our identity is often a real issue. Many of us are defined by “what we do.” In my case my “doing” strand was taken away from me when I had my brain tumour. The next option is to find our identity in our illness – a kind of excuse  and avoidance of responsibility. I met a fully blind CEO today who told me that 80% of blind people  of working age did not work. Their adopted identity often being, “I can’t because I am blind.” We must break out of this mentality. Our identity is in WHO we are and we must build it around our strengths. Maybe it could be : I’m a child of God, I’m a Mum / Dad or husband / wife. Our identity truly shapes us and too often we are seeking it in the wrong places….if it’s work – be careful it may be taken away!
